Your Display Doesn’t Have to Eat Up Your Battery
Not all device makers are prepared for 5G and all the power efficiency they’ll need when the onslaught of data is unleashed. But you can be if you go after the most inefficient component in your stack — it’s what’s lighting your display.
A backlight needs a lot of LEDs, which need to be diffused with multiple light guide panels or filters. This drains a lot of power and creates a lot of heat in your device. This mature technology has been around for nearly a century, so it’s stable but not the most efficient.
The O in OLEO stands for organic, and organic materials are inherently less stable than non-organic. OLEO is also different from LCD in that it emits its own light (unlike LCDs which have a backlight that transmits light), which means OLEDs don’t need a rigid backlight but are difficult to source.
RLCD + FLP
A Reflective screen uses ambient light to illuminate the screen. With an ultra-thin front light panel, you can light the screen in conditions where there isn’t enough ambient light. This technology combines the stability of LCD with the efficiency of Reflective display.
